How to Use a Portable GPS Tracking Device System

GPS systems are a great tool that can be used for a wide variety of uses. You can utilize a GPS tracking device to pinpoint your exact location while you're driving, hiking, running, fishing, sailing, biking, or exploring. No matter where you are in the world, a GPS tracking system can help you find your way.

GPS isn't just for finding your own location, however. It can be used for car tracking , equipment tracking, asset tracking , and tracking people too. If you have a valuable item out in the open, such as a boat or motorcycle, you can put a GPS tracking device on it, and track its location in case it gets stolen. Business owners also utilize GPS fleet tracking to keep track of their company vehicles and ensure drivers are going where they're supposed to be going. Read on to learn how to use this amazing technology.

Getting Set Up With Your GPS Tracker

There are two types of GPS trackers:
hardwired and portable battery-powered tracking devices.
For the purpose of this article, we will be discussing portable GPS trackers. Portable trackers are wireless, so you can use them for different things on a regular basis. Portable systems can move easily from car to car or person to person. There are no cumbersome wires anywhere on the device.

Once you have bought your new portable GPS tracking system, it's important to determine where it can and cannot track from. The GPS signal will penetrate glass, plastic, foam, fiberglass, and wood, but will not penetrate metal. So areas like under the hood of a car or in the trunk will not work, but underneath seats or the glove box of a car are okay. You can also put it in a backpack to track your child or attach it to a valuable item in case it gets stolen.

Always ensure your tracking device is fully charged before you use it to track someone/something. Most trackers will give you around eight hours of use on a full charge, and extended-life battery kits can provide anywhere from 60 up to 120 hours of actual movement on a single charge.

Tracking Options

Depending on the tracking device you have purchased, your options may be different, but most will require that you log on to the tracking/reporting website and activate your account. It's usually on this website that you will find live tracking features to show specific information about the vehicle (or other object) you are tracking, such as latitude, longitude, and its speed of travel. You will also find most reporting and alert system options online, such as when certain "alert zones" are entered, aggressive driving, speeding, etc.

GPS Tracker Options

If using the tracker in your own car, you will find many options on the Wireless Personal Tracking Device Web interface which will usually include directions and routing, maps, and search features to find nearby gas stations, restaurants, etc. This feature can be helpful to guide a driver of the vehicle to any of these locations. Because there are so many different types of GPS trackers on the market today, this article cannot cover exact directions for every type. For more information on using your portable GPS tracking device system, consult your user manual.

Advantage of Using GPS Tracking Devices for Your Business

How to Make Your Private or Commercial Vehicle Perform to its Full Potential With The Help of a Vehicle Tracking System (GPS)

GPS tracking is not a new technology. It has been around since the 1980s, when it first began being developed for the military. It was originally meant to help keep track of troops and movements, as well as create a sophisticated mapping system to help commanders find their way over rough and unknown terrain.

Today that same technology is so advanced that it is possible to track in real time and create histories of where the device has been. And GPS technology is available to anyone, and at reasonable price.

As customers continue to expect faster service, quicker delivery times, shipment tracking, and a whole range of customized delivery needs, it has become more difficult for fleets of all sizes stay ahead of the game. However, a simple solution for every business is becoming readily available with constantly evolving fleet management tools like global positioning satellite (GPS) tracking systems.

The benefits of GPS tracking are invaluable to any fleet owner. By implementing a fleet tracking system, managers get an unprecedented level of access and control to their entire fleet. And being able to track every vehicle is just the beginning of all the benefits you can expect when you use a GPS tracking system.

What is Tracking System?

Generally a tracking system is used for the observing of persons or objects on the move and supplying a timely ordered sequence of respective location data to a model e.g. capable to serve for depicting the motion on a display capability.

Tracking in virtual space

In virtual space technology, a tracking system is generally a system capable of rendering virtual space to a human observer while tracking the observer’s body coordinates. For instance, in dynamic virtual auditory space simulations, a real-time head tracker provides feedback to the central processor, allowing for selection of appropriate head-related transfer functions at the estimated current position of the observer relative to the environment.

Tracking in real world

There are myriad tracking systems. Some are ‘lag time’ indicators, that is, the data is collected after an item has passed a point for example a bar code or choke point or gate. Others are ‘real-time’ or ‘near real-time’ like Global Positioning Systems depending on how often the data is refreshed. There are bar-code systems which require a person to scan items and automatic identification (RFID auto-id). For the most part, the tracking worlds are composed of discrete hardware and software systems for different applications. That is, bar-code systems are separate from Electronic Product Code (EPC) systems, GPS systems are separate from active real time locating systems or RTLS for example, a passive RFID system would be used in a warehouse to scan the boxes as they are loaded on a truck – then the truck itself is tracked on a different system using GPS with its own features and software. The major technology “silos” in the supply chain are:

  • Distribution/Warehousing/Manufacturing
  • Yard Management
  • Fleet Management
  • Attendance Management

Types of Tracking Systems

  • GPS Applications
  • Real-time Locating Systems (RTLS)

How to GPS Tracking Devices Works ?

A GPS tracking unit is a device, normally carried by a moving vehicle or person, that uses the Global Positioning System to determine and track its precise location, and hence that of its carrier, at intervals. The recorded location data can be stored within the tracking unit, or it may be transmitted to a central location data base, or Internet-connected computer, using a cellular (GPRS or SMS), radio, or satellite modem embedded in the unit. This allows the asset’s location to be displayed against a map backdrop either in real time or when analyzing the track later, using GPS tracking software. Data tracking software is available for smartphones with GPS capability.
